We are looking for new volunteers to join our team, supporting us to provide legal advice and representation to our community. As a Legal Casework Volunteer you'll learn about immigration and human rights law in practice whilst also contributing to our client's cases and helping to change lives within our community. You'll assist our legal team in preparing cases, conduct legal research to inform the advice and guidance we provide to clients and shadow appointments to learn about the skills needed to conduct complex casework for people who are often going through a difficult and stressful time. You'll also provide support at our busy one-off advice drop-in sessions where you'll get to learn how to apply the law in real life situations across a wide raft of issues from claiming asylum, to family reunion, to immigration appeals.
We ask for the following from all our volunteers:
A minimum of 1 full day per week. Volunteer days are from 9.45am - 4pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
A minimum 6 month commitment to volunteering (we understand that circumstances might change but we ask that you don't apply if you already know you can't commit to volunteering with us for at least this length of time).
The ability to volunteer every week at our office in Sheffield City Centre - we cannot facilitate remote volunteering.
A commitment to the values and aims of our organisation (please read about these on our website).
In return we offer:
The opportunity to get hands on experience of legal casework.
The chance to contribute to securing positive outcomes for our clients, changing lives and preventing human rights abuses.
Access to a wide range of legal and migrant justice related professional training.
The opportunity to become a qualified IAA (formerly OISC) adviser.
Qualifying Work Experience under the SQE solicitor training route.
The chance to be part of a team that is committed to fighting for migrant justice.
Lunch and travel expenses (within Sheffield).
Use of AI for application forms: We know that AI can be a really helpful tool when writing applications, however please bear in mind that through the application process we are looking to get an understanding of your level of written English and a sense of who you are. Where applications have been written by AI it can be harder for us to do this so we may be less likely to shortlist these applicants.
